What is Discord:-

Discord is a free instant messaging and VoIP application platform designed for creating communities ranging from gamers to education and businesses. Create a home for your communities and friends, where you can stay close and have fun over text, voice, and video. Whether you are a part of a school group, a worldwide community or just bunch of friends that wants to spend time, you should use Discord because it makes it easy to talk and hang out more often. A Discord server has many channels in where you can collaborate, share and just talk about anything you want. You can easily enter chat rooms, make video calls, and create multiple groups for friends with this app.

Lot of people does not know that Discord also offers video calling and screen sharing solution as well. In the latest software edition, Discord released its screen sharing feature. This most popular VoIP application (Discord) allows you and up to nine other people to do live video chats while sharing desktops. Screen Sharing is very useful and it can make Discord a real competitor to other instant messaging and VoIP applications available on the market.

In this article, I will show you how to use the screen share feature in Discord and the limitations of this feature.

Discord application is available on mobile and desktop platforms, and combines the features of:

  • A message board
  • A chat room
  • A VoIP chatting system

What is Screen Share in Discord:-

When you share your screen, you can allow a single person to view your stream, a small group of friends, or anyone who has access to a specific Discord server channel. It’s a lot easier and doesn’t require any additional software.

How Does Screen Sharing Work in Discord:-

There are 2 ways to share your screen in Discord:-

  1. While you are connected to a voice channel in a Discord server.
  2. During a call placed through Direct Message.

Share Screen via Direct Message:-

  • Call the person that you want to share your screen with.
  • Click “Turn on Screen Share” icon to continue.
  • Small Window will pop up on the screen. And there you have to select the quality of stream and the click on “Share” to begin the process.
  • To stop streaming, move your mouse over your stream and click the screen icon with the X in it.

It will work smoothly on 720p@30FPS and it requires good upload speed. So, see how easy it is, to share your screen in Discord.

How to Screen Share in Discord Server:-

Sharing your screen through a voice channel in a discord server is very easy. If you only want to share your screen with specific people, don’t use this technique. Remember that anyone who joins the voice channel will be able to view your stream if they want to.

Here’s how to share your screen on Discord using a voice channel:

  • Click a Discord server in your server list, and then click a voice channel in the list of voice channels on the left.
  • Click on the “Go Live” button which looks like a computer display with a smaller recording icon, to share the screen and start the process.
  • Verify the settings, and click “Go Live”.
  • Other users in the same voice channel will now be able to view your screen share. You will see a LIVE icon next to your name in the voice channel.
  • To stop the sharing, click the Stop Streaming icon.

It is not available to watch for every person in the server, and they will have to join manually to watch it. Users can minimize the video window and browse around. You can monitor the number of people who are watching it.

Screen Share on Discord Mobile (iPad, iPhone, Android):-

Discord runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and in web browsers. The user interface for the mobile version of the Discord application is different from the desktop version. A video calling feature is added to Discord, which lets you share your webcam and microphone on any voice channel. Fortunately, the feature supports Android and iOS mobile operating systems.

  • Join any voice channel of your choice.
  • Click on the video camera icon located at the bottom left side.
  • A pop up window will appear saying Grant Permission. Click on “Device Setting” and then tap on the camera button to grant permission.
  • Now you are live and sharing microphone and camera with everyone present in the voice channel.

Video Quality is good on the 4G network but those who have 3G connection, it will work smoothly. But you cannot share your phone screen on Discord. I believe that Discord team will soon add phone screen sharing feature in the future.

Use Video Chat in Discord Server:-

In the latest software update, Discord official tem added the Video chat feature in Discord. It helps you to communicate with other users, players, teams and management using the webcam. It is a pretty useful and handy feature.

  • Join the Voice Channel. Make sure you have the role to share your screen and video chat.
  • Find the “Video” option and click it to turn on the camera.
  • A new window will pop up which will share your webcam. You will have plenty of options available in the webcam player.

You can mute your microphone, cut off the webcam stream and share your screen right from the player. But, you don’t have the option to cut off the stream and remain in the voice channel.

The Video chat will work nicely and you will not face any problems until or unless you have slow network connection and hardware issues. A good internet connection is required for the process to proceed smoothly.

Screen Share is a useful and wonderful feature in Discord. Discord has it users from all over the world who are using it day to day life. Discord is free to use. It was made for online gamers as a free alternative to other voice chat services.
